Grand Prairie's Worm Farm is owned and operated by Vicki Sullivan and is located in Grand Prairie, Texas.
The purpose of the farm is to raise red worms and help expand the knowledge of worm composting and the use of worm castings.
My Story
In 2003 I bought a house in Grand Prairie, Texas. I noticed in the Newsletter that came with the water bill that the city was offering a class about composting. The class was being held on a Thursday night, a Friday night and all day Saturday. I called the person in charge at the city to ask if I had a choice to sign up for either the Thursday night, the Friday night or the Saturday class. They said it was a 16 hour course so to get all the benefit from it you should go to all the sessions. I am sure some people would think, "Get a life, 16 hours about composting". Well, I had been very interested in recycling and the environment and this just seemed like the next step to take although I didn't have a clue what composting was. Maybe I should have looked up the word in the dictionary so I would have known what I was getting myself into.
What I learned in that class was amazing and it left me with a whole new perspective on garbage. The City of Grand Prairie offers this class (as do a lot of cities in the Dallas-Fort Worth area) as a means of education about the difference between organic and inorganic garbage and there are constructive things we can be doing with our organic garbage besides putting it next to the curbside and letting the garbage company pick it up and deposit it in the landfill.
To be continued.
